The Reality about Spa Therapists and Black Friday
Years ago when I worked as an esthetician, every Thanksgiving Day I would hear “I can’t believe you have to work tomorrow” from well-meaning family and friends. Part of me hated it because it seemed that everyone else had Black Friday off. I knew that they would be shopping, socializing or lounging at home with family scarfing down leftover pie and hot turkey sandwiches.
But another part of me knew that I had willingly signed on to work in the spa industry. And in fact, Black Friday and Small Business Saturday signaled the beginning of my heaviest money making period of the year.
Unlike other sectors of service where salaries are paid, many of us in the spa industry make our money based upon commissions and tips. Depending upon our skill and strength of customer engagement, we can build a strong following. This, combined with astute recommendations of proper treatments and home care products can result in a very decent income.
During the holiday season spa customers are in a more festive receptive state of mind. Most people are looking for ways to purchase gifts for loved ones, friends and themselves easily and with minimal stress. Gift certificates, spa products and enhanced treatments can be the answer.
Spa management, how have you enabled your therapists to take full advantage of their earning power? Engagement and sales are teachable skills and can easily increase a therapist’s salary by 30% which is significant especially during the holiday season.
This leads me to another question; how are your people feeling as Black Friday approaches? Are they hyped and anticipating their extra earnings from the increased flow of customers? Or are they resentful and wishing they were home with their families?
The ball is in your court.
